 BANDIT
-- An 8-year old Bernese Mountain Dog/Border
Collie mix, Bandit is a very happy, friendly
boy. He has the wonderful bernese temperament
and heavy coat, but he likely borrowed his beautiful
markings and freckles from a border collie.
He likes to be around people, and his ever happy
mood seems to be contagious.
Bandit is very curious about everything around
him, and you can often see him bouncing around
like a puppy. He gets along with other dogs,
and is good with children also (although he
could easily knock a small child over in his
bounciness). He has seen some cats, and seems
to ignore them.
|
|
 Bandit
didn't know much when he came to the shelter,
but he has picked up some basic commands since.
He still pulls on a leash, but some training
and an Easy Walk harness would probably turn
him into a wonderful companion for someone who
is looking for a dog to accompany them on long
afternoon strolls.
Bandit was found wandering around a neighborhood
during the winter, cold and hungry. Thankfully
some good people brought him to a shelter where
he was neutered, had his teeth cleaned, and
got his shots. He is healthy now, and ready
to go to his new home.
Bandit is living near Pulaski,
NY. For more information about him or to request
an adoption application, please contact Nancy
at ufhashelter@yahoo.com.

 LUCKY
-- Lucky is a 1 year old border collie mix.
His neutered, hw neg, utd on all vaccines and
current on hw preventative. He is currently
living with children, cats and other dogs in
his foster home.
Lucky loves to play chase and keep away with
his foster siblings and is respectful of dog
savvy cats but with chase the one resident feline
runner.
|
|
Lucky
came to us completely unsocialized and has made
lots of progress. We do not think he was abused,
just neglected and left on a back yard chain.
He walks much better on a leash now but does
best with a gentle leader. He is still learning
that the world is not a scary place so he will
need a patient family who is willing to keep
up exposing him to new places and things at
his pace.
Lucky
rides well in the car and is crate trained.
He has not had any accidents in a few weeks
but is still relying on the other dogs to ask
to go potty so he will need time to adjust to
his new routine and figure out a new signal.
If you would like to adopt Lucky please contact
Alicia @ alynn2@sbcglobal.net.
Lucky is being fostered in Northeast CT.

 BELLA
-- I am a Herding dog with a capital 'H'! Call
me a Dolly Parton song, because I have the most
amazing coat of many colors. You can cancel
your cable and gaze at my back, which has a
different designer pattern from the rest of
me.
I walk nicely on a leash, and I like other
dogs, though I can be a little bossy with them.
I am very border collie like in my behavior,
and have been in trouble for herding children,
and showing a little too much "grip" in that
regard! Please don't place me with children,
because I can can shine in other departments.
I am available for adoption at the MSPCA Animal
Care and Adoption Center, at 350 So. Huntington
Ave., Jamaica Plain.
For more information, contact
Terri Bright, at tbright@mspca.org
or 617/522-5055 x 5297.

SPIRIT
-- (16 mos., 45 lbs)
Spirit is an absolute gem of a girl, sparkling
with energy. She is VERY smart, curious, and
fun. Supposedly a BC mix, her temperament is
more like a purebred. Spirit has been socialized
beautifully, with one loving foster family from
age 8 weeks. She has had extensive exposure
to people, dogs, sights and sounds. She loves
giving kisses and smiles, getting chin and belly
rubs.
She
is good-natured and well-adjusted. She doesn't
have separation anxiety, fear or aggression.
She isn't overly sensitive and responds well
to correction. Her inside behavior is well-mannered,
she doesn't destroy. She actually has the ability
to give herself a quick time out to calm down
when her exuberance is unreciprocated!
Spirit seeks a deep bond with people. Initially
she is pushy and will try to control any relationship.
However when secure with firm, consistent leadership,
she is happy to follow your command and tries
hard to be a good girl. She imitates and "helps,"
unloading the dishwasher, getting the hats/gloves,
bringing items she thinks you want. She is so
happy when you give her jobs and appreciate
her work. Spirit likes to meet and play with
dogs. She seems to have bossy alpha tendencies
and sometimes needs to be reminded of her manners
with non-BC dogs. She does not currently have
the opportunity to play with other BCs, but
we think she would do well with them, especially
if they could match her energy level.
|
|
Spirit
LOVES novelty and new situations to explore.
She loves training, is eager to please, anticipating
commands. If she has no outlet for her energy
and intelligence, working behaviors (herding,
nipping, chasing, barking) are exhibited. However,
she also very much loves calm evenings at home
sharing affection with her family. She has been
respectful with children she knows, but with
her working behaviors and especially her adeptness
with doors /gates, she should be supervised
around small children.
Spirit
is patiently waiting for her new life to begin.
She doesn't have a fenced yard and, sadly, she
has to spend some time in a crate of a rescue
room. She is frustrated in a suburban setting
with children, joggers, bicycles, cars, dogs,
cats, birds, balls, Frisbees yet no freedom.
Spirit's foster mom loves her, walks her often
and is dedicated to finding her a home where
her wonderful BC nature is treasured. Many non-BC
applicants have been turned down because Spirit
deserves one successful placement with an experienced
BC family to understand her, keep her engaged
and shower her with affection. Spirit will give
so much in return!
Spirit is spayed, UTD with shots, and has completed
basic obedience, and is very good with "come."
Call or write to learn more.

 TOBY
-- is a 10 month old Border Collie/ Retriever
mix (born 5/20/07). His previous family got
him and his brother as pups for their 2 young
sons. However the pups were never allowed in
the house. They spent the whole winter outside.
The boys did play with them quite often, but
the parents decided they had gotten too large.
When they got them as pups they were told they
wouldn't get over 50lbs.
Toby's brother has found a nice home and now
it is Toby's turn. He is very sweet with people.
His tail is a bit short and he doesn't like
people messing with it much, so he would probably
not do well with young children. He has never
been tested with cats or small animals so it
is probably best that he not live with any.
Toby is very dominant with other dogs. He would
probably do best without other dogs or with
a submissive dog and a human willing to provide
constant supervision during all interaction.
He would probably be ok with other dogs provided
the person be experienced with integrating dominant
dogs with others. He is submissive towards his
humans. He definitely has a Border Collie temperament.
|
|
Toby
really needs a person willing to work with him
on his issues and give him something to do.
He might even do well in dog sports with training
and patience, he certainly has the energy. With
some work he'll be a great companion. He is
available for adoption or foster. He needs a
place very soon as he is not getting along with
the other dogs where he is staying.
Toby is currently not neutered but will be
prior to adoption. He is currently up to date
on his shots. He is working on crate training.
Please consider giving this sweet boy a home.

but needs time to adjust to strangers. He needs

He is neutered and up to date on all his shots.

OLLIE
Meet Oliver (Ollie). Ollie is an Australian
Shepherd that was rescued from a high kill shelter
in TN. Ollie lives with his foster Mom and Dad
and 2 Border Collie brothers and one cat sister.
He is about a year old UTD on shots, neutered,
housebroken, crate trained and learning new
things every day. He is very smart and embraces
every quality of the Aussie breed. He is high
energy and has an amazing sense of self.
Ollie
is not scared of a single thing (including the
vacuum). He loves the water, belly rubs, snow
and watching cars pass by the house out of the
front window. If you let him, he will sit down
right outside the bathtub while you are taking
a shower and peek his head in and bite at the
water as it comes down. He has become the house
shadow and follows anything that moves.
Though he does have a mind of his own Ollie
is a very fast learner and aims to please. Because
he is high intensity, Ollie would do best in
a home with older children (he loves kids but
can be a little rough when playing)! He gets
along fine with cats as long as the cat is dog
savvy and can stick up for itself.
An adoption application (including personal
and vet references) is required along with a
fenced yard. He would prefer to be in a home
with other dogs because he really craves interaction.
If you are interested in
meeting Ollie or if you have any questions please
call Bryce at 1-262-745-4477 or email laducb@yahoo.com.
Ollie is being fostered in Upstate New York
- about an hour north of Albany.

OK, not a Border Collie, but he loves to play
with them! :~)
HUCK
FINN appears to be an English Coonhound
who the vets guess is about 5 years of age,
although he acts much younger. He was picked
up from the middle of the road, where he was
found hobbling out of the way of passing cars
with all 4 of his feet bleeding from running
for who-knows-how-long. He has since been bathed,
dewormed, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped
and started on heartworm preventative. (Whew!)
No one claimed this sweet boy, and we really
cannot imagine why not! Their loss will definitely
be Huck's new family's gain!
|
|
Huck
Finn is an utterly delightful dog. He loves
people and attention, and will lean against
you for pets. He adores other dogs, playing
through wrestling, bitey face, and chase - he
especially loves a good chase when another dog
is fetching. He chases on land, and he chases
in the water too - baying in his lovely hound
dog voice all the way! He is a fantastic swimmer.
He also fetches! He loves to go for a jog along
side the bike attached via the k-9 Cruiser bike
attachment (http://www.adogsbestfriend.com/item.cfm?pid=2).
He is very athletic and fit. He's a bit underweight
at the moment but should catch up shortly as
he has a good appetite. He enjoys riding in
a car (he rides in a crate.) He does bark periodically
out of excitement - he knows he might arrive
someplace fun!!
Huck Finn has been good with the indoor, dog
loving, kitty that lives in his foster home.
No doubt, he would chase after a kitty that
ran from him, as would most dogs. He has shown
strong interest in the parrots in their aviary
at his foster home.
|
|

Time
to Trick or Treat!
|
Huck Finn came to use chewing his tail out,
perhaps as a stress reaction or a compulsive
behavior. He NO LONGER does this! His tail is
almost completely healed up. He does have some
mild separation anxiety which manifests as barking
for a short period of time when you leave and
when you return. He is currently on daily medication
(Clomicalm) which he may be able to be weaned
off of, or may be something he needs for a longer
period of time. We'll be happy to discuss this
in more detail to any potential adopter.
Huck
Finn is looking for an active home with a securely
fenced yard where he can run and play. He is
a hound, and it would not be safe to allow him
off-lead in an unfenced area, as he could easily
pick up a scent and be off. Ideally, there will
be another dog or dogs for him to run and play
with - he has so much fun with his canine friends
in his foster home. He walks nicely on a Gentle
Leader and does not appear to have any training
such as sit, down, etc. His foster mom is working
on this.
If you are interested in opening your home
and your heart to this delightful dog, please
email nebcr.amy@gmail.com
for an adoption application. Huck Finn is eager
to begin his new life!

CHAMPION
- My name doesn't begin to describe
me. I am a Border Collie with quite a story
to tell. I was found on the streets of NY with
a tumor the size of two fists! The Doctors say
that I am a miracle and quite a fighter. I underwent
emergency surgery and have since been feeling
much better. I was very thin and neglected for
a long time. Now that I am feeling better I
am starting to enjoy life.
I
play with the foster dogs where I am staying
and am learning to stay with my foster family
on outings without a leash. I am a REALLY good
boy. I am protective of the ones I love. Everyone
who meets me can not believe what a good boy
I am! I am not much of a snuggler but if you
scratch my back I will love you forever. I am
great with children, seniors, and small dogs.
You can see more photos of me at www.sugarbushfarm.net/champion.htm

MOLLY
- Molly is such a sweet and gentle dog. Right
sided Shepherd ears, Left sided Border collie
or spaniel ears and faithful to her breed, Molly
is an independent thinker. She requires lots
of daily exercise and LOVES to play with all
dogs. She would do best with a dog her size,
but is kind to all dogs.
Molly was surrendered back to Almost Home Rescue
after her family made the painful decision that
Molly was not right fit for their family, and
they are not able to provide the exercise that
Molly needs and did not have another dog for
Molly to play with.
Easy and loving, although she never sticks
around too long for pats and cuddling, Molly
would do well in a home with other medium high
energy dogs. She would do best in a large fenced
yard with other dogs, which would compliment
her daily exercise requirements, or doggy daycare.
Molly
loves the dog park and has perfect dog park
manners. She loves other dogs and is even submissive
to the small, cranky, resident dog at her foster
home. Molly has been completely trustworthy
in the home and is house trained, and is not
destructive. She is very loving, but not a lap
dog, nor does she want to be. Molly will swing
by for a pat or two, a belly rub here and there,
then off she goes. She prefers to sleep on the
floor next to your bed at night.
Molly
is learning to walk on a leash, but she is extremely
strong. She is very, very smart and picks up
on things very quickly. She knows sit and lay
down, shake, and High Five! Her estimated age
is about 28 months. Molly is tall and leggy,
and weighs 70 lbs. Molly can be an alert barker,
but settles quickly. This is normal for her
breed after all! She is currently being fostered
in Westbrook, Maine.
Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption.
Applications can be found at www.almosthomerescue.net
and can be e-mailed attention of Adele to lonepine_ahr@yahoo.com
for this particular dog.

JAKE
-- Jake is a delightful 1-year-old altered male
Border collie mix that was owner surrendered
because of chewing. He was a wonderful companion
to the owner's teen son who is quadriplegic.
Since Jake was constantly by the son's side,
he would chew the various wires on the battery
operated wheelchair and cords on other medical
equipment. I'm sure this was done out of boredom
but it became a financial burden for the family.
Jake is intelligent, very playful and friendly.
Initially he did quite well with other dogs
but has become increasingly agitated in his
cage and does bark and growl at other dogs.
This problem should resolve itself with proper
exercise and activity.
Jake is currently at a CT shelter where his
situation is perilous because of his cage climbing.
Please contact Julie at jloparo@optonline.net
if interested or need additional information
about the handsome and quite wonderful Jake.

COMET
-- is a 4-year-old neutered male Collie mix.
When Comet was just a young pup, his owner kept
him tied to a tree in their yard with just an
umbrella for shelter! Three years later, the
family moved and just left Comet behind! *My
Goodness! A kind neighbor was looking out for
him and called animal control, and now Comet
has a chance for a happy new life! Comet is
the perfect size and although he can be a little
shy with strangers at first, he is truly very
sweet with a happy personality! Comet loves
long walks and riding in a car. Comet will make
a loyal grateful companion for a calm adult
household willing to give him some time to adjust
and letting him know what it's like to be loved.
Should be placed in a house without children.
Good with other dogs and cats.

Adoption League in Hackettstown, NJ at (908)

 TREVOR
-- is an extremely playful, boundingly friendly
and affectionate 6 year old lab/border collie
mix (although his black & white coloring and
his belly makes him look more bovine than canine)
and until our daughter started walking he was
incredibly protective of her and was and remains
boisterously affectionate towards other children
in our apartment block. He seemed slightly put
out when she started crawling, but since she
started walking properly around our one-bed
apartment he has become randomly aggressive
towards her - bearing his teeth, growling and
barking - never in response to anything she
does (she doesn't charge towards him or make
any moves in his direction), on the contrary
she will often be in another part of the apartment
and he will come and find her just to growl
and bark at her. We have always used positive
reinforcement with him (associating her with
good experiences for him), but we have been
unable to spend as much time with and attention
on Trevor since she was born and even less now
that she is walking and this seems to be the
main issue for him.
|
|
He
is around 55 lbs and has a slight waddle in
his walk - too much apartment living and not
enough exercise - but otherwise is in great
health, neutered and has veterinary insurance.
Trevor's an obsessive ball/frisbee/stick catcher,
and will leap (literally) on any opportunity
to go for a walk or run, but he is well apartment-trained
and survives happily on two excursions round
the block per day (about 12 hours apart). other
points to note: he sheds badly all year round;
he howls along with any police or fire siren;
he has a varied temperament with other dogs
- some he seems to take to instantly and play
with, others - often younger - he will bark
at on sight; he has a dislike of vacuum cleaners,
and he is deeply afraid of balloons (I kid you
not) and will whimper and hide when he sees
one (anything from a small party balloon to
an airship seems to strike fear).

Please
Adopt Bentley
The
story of Bentley begins last October with his
abandonment at the emergency clinic where I
work (I am a vet). He had been hit by a car,
and had skull injuries, chest injuries, and
a dislocated hip. His female owner was moving
away and there was evidence of abuse toward
the dog by the male owner. There were twin 18
month old boys in the family. Despite his injuries,
Bentley was very sweet in the hospital. I had
a vacancy for a nice dog who was good with children
so I did his surgeries, neutered him, treated
his heartworm disease and brought him into my
family.
Once he got used to us he became very loving
and affectionate. The kids (1, 4, and 5 years)
can take food out of his bowl, toys out of his
mouth, and put hats on him while he licks their
faces. However, Bentley has always shown signs
of aggression toward outsiders approaching our
house. All I have ever had to do to calm the
situation was to have the dog outside when people
come into the house and then let Bentley in
afterwards. When inside Bentley becomes his
usual sweet and affectionate self.
The other day, though, our four year old son
invited a ten year old neighbor into our fenced-in
back yard, while I was briefly out of sight.
The neighbor, a young girl, reported that Bentley
ran across the yard and bit her hand.
I can no longer keep him here under the circumstances.
He is a loving dog but he needs to be where
he can be kept away from strangers when they
come in. He is 45 pounds, black, and is non-shedding.
He is submissive to my two cats and has never
shown signs of aggression to other dogs.
If anyone can help me out, please call Leah
at 207-799-5487.
