New England Border Collie Rescue - Helping Border Collies in Need

Dex is an extremely handsome 6 year old black and white rough coat border collie. He came into rescue after his owner passed away unexpectedly. Dex is a little on the heavy side weighing in at 55 lbs. and he is on low fat dog food. The vet thinks his weight should be around 47 lbs.

Dex is used to having someone around all of the time and doesn't like to be left alone. He is not destructive, but he will bark and paw at the door when you leave him. Dex is very protective of his place and people and will bark at anyone who comes into his space or around his people. He also does not like UPS men or trucks.

He loves to ride in the boat as well as swim. He loves to ride in the car. He likes to hike and go for walks although he pulls a bit on leash. His foster home is working on that with him. He loves to play tug, and given his size, it can be a pretty strenuous game. He is housetrained and knows many commands. He is up to date on shots, microchipped and on preventatives.

Dex has definite herding instincts which makes him not great around older people or young children. He has handed out a few herding nips as well when there is a lot of activity in the household so he has to be watched for that. He gets along well with other dogs although he gets along better with female dogs. He has not been tested around cats, but he will chase small animals (squirrels, chipmunks, etc.) He settles well in the house. He has decent recall, but it needs work. If he is engaged in a game of tug or playing frisbie, he will not wander off. However, if he is just outside and something catches his attention (a bird, a squirrel, etc.) he is slow about returning to you.

Dex is being fostered in central New Hampshire.
